Joshua M. Liao, MD, MSc, FACP (@JoshuaLiaoMD) is a board-certified internal medicine physician and Associate Professor in the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine where he also directs the Value and Systems Science Lab – a unit dedicated to improving health care by transforming ideas and data into actionable insight about how we finance, deliver, and make decisions about health care.
He is also the Medical Director of Payment Strategy at UW Medicine and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UW School of Public Health. Dr. Liao trained at Brigham & Women’s Hospital where he was also a Clinical Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Liao received his health policy and health services training at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Liao’s research focuses on two related areas: policy initiatives that reform health care payment and delivery, and provider initiatives that use principles from behavioral science to drive performance in those reforms. He is a leading national expert on payment and related delivery reform, advising decision-makers on these issues through service on the US Department of Health and Human Services' Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) and work as an advisor to the national RVU Update Committee (RUC).
